What’s your favourite worship song right now? What was it five years ago? If you’ve been part of a worshipping community for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that some songs are popular for a while, and then after a time don’t appear quite so often during church services.
Faith Today’s newest cover story in the Mar/Apr issue digs into the changing world of contemporary worship songs and examines their life span (getting shorter almost by the year!).
The writers on this story including Mike Tapper in South Carolina, Marc Jolicoeur in New Brunswick and others are members of the research team that conducted a scholarly study on the life spans of worship songs. In their article they take you behind the scenes of their research and explain the rollercoaster ups and downs of life as a worship song today.
Then, we did something fun. We created a Spotify playlist of the top 118 worship songs they studied, which they refer to as their “Diamond” list. (Check it out in the big black box below.) We had a lot of fun putting it together, listening to snippets of songs that took us back through time to a certain church or a worship event we attended in different eras of our lives.
We think you’ll really enjoy this. Many will find it a walk down memory lane. Let us know. We’d love to hear from you. You can contact us anytime.
No doubt many of us have favourite worship songs that aren’t on the Diamond list, so we went all the way and created a second playlist that we’d like to invite you to contribute to.
You can find it here and also below, and since it is a collaborative playlist Spotify users (both Free and Premium) can simply search up your favourite hymns and worship songs on Spotify and add them to this playlist.
You don’t need to use Spotify to share your favourites with us, you can also just drop us an email. We’d love to hear what worship music is helping you care for your soul lately.
(If you’re new to adding to a collaborative playlist, here’s how: You need to be in the Spotify app not just a browser window. First, find the "Faith Today readers worship song list" playlist and add it to your library. If you’ve got the playlist showing, click the three dots to the right of the big green play button to find the "Add to library" option. Congratulations, you’re halfway there. Now search up your favourite songs in Spotify’s vast library using the search function, and when you find a favourite song your congregation sings then click the three dots on the right of a track listing, select the "Add to playlist" option, and choose "Faith Today readers worship song list." Godspeed!)
We look forward to see how this shared list will grow. Let’s restrict ourselves to songs used for congregational singing this time (we know there’s also a lot of other great Christian music, from opera to heavy metal, that we’ll have to save for another time).
Thanks for being part of Canada’s Christian conversation!
P.S. What you’d like to see in future issues of Faith Today is really important to us. So we’ve put together a Reader Survey to make it easy for you to tell us how you are enjoying Faith Today, and how we can make it better. We warmly invite you to complete it. It’s not long. It’s not complicated. And there are prizes!
